Held International conference “Women in security sector, Resolution 1325 SC UN”

International Conference “Women in security sector, Resolution 1325 SC UN” was held from 13 to 15 October 2010 in Guards Barracks, in the organization of Strategic Research Institute and Ministry of Defence of Kingdom of Norway. At the opening ceremony, spoke Head of Strategic Planning Department of Serbian MoD, general-major Bozidar Forca, PhD, then ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway in Belgrade Nils Ragnar Kamsvag and acting SRI director, Jovanka Saranovic, PhD. In opening speech, general-major Forca, who is also a chief of MoD Working Group for drafting the National Action Plan for implementation of Resolution 1325 SC UN, pointed out the fact that this conference is a part of many activities in the field of implementation of Resolution 1325 SC UN. Welcoming guests and participants, Saranovic, PhD, said that by accepting the concept of gender equality as one of the strategic commitment, Serbian Armed Forces obliged, in accordance to its assets, to achieve the highest standards in that field, respecting the experience, specificity of inherited positions, and trends in the countries which, in that case, can be an example worth and possible to be followed. Ambassador Nils Ragnar Kamsvag emphasized the importance of the role and position of women in the defence sector, and that every state is to take a responsibility for adoption and implementation of this document.

During the conference, the achievements and restrictions in the field of implementation of Resolution 1325 SC UN were discussed, 10 years after its adoptions, then the positions of regional states regarding implementation of Resolution, as well as the women in armed conflicts and peace building operations. The concrete proposals how to enhance the regional cooperation in the field of security and gender equality were important part of this conference.

At the conference there were representatives of governmental and nongovernmental sector, international institutions, academics, people involved in peacekeeping operations, as well as the MoD and MoI representatives of participating countries.



Researchers from the SRI as a part of MoD Working Group for drafting National Action Plan for implementation of Resolution 1325

Researchers from the SRI actively participate as members of MoD Working Group for drafting National Action Plan for implementation of Resolution 1325. Acting Director Jovanka Saranovic, PhD, is also Deputy Head of the Working Group. The aim of the National Action Plan is to increase the visibility of women in the security sector, their involvement in peace processes, as well as improving of the implementation of gender equality. SRI researchers have actively participated in all phases of the work on Recommendations for Drafting the National Action Plan.

SRI organizes International conference “Women in Security Sector, UN Security Council Resolution 1325” from 13 to15 October 2010, in cooperation with the Ministry of Defence of Kingdom of Norway. The Conference is a continuation of previous efforts of the Serbian Ministry of Defence to draft the National Action Plan (NAP) for the implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, aiming at offering support to the efforts already invested in the implementation of the said Resolution in Serbia. The Conference will be an opportunity for international experts, as well as for experts coming from international organizations and the countries of the region to share their experiences and exchange information related to the role of women in the Security Sector, including the status of regional and international activities pertaining to the implementation of the Resolution 1325 ten years after its adoption. An important aim of the Conference is also to find ways to enhance the level of cooperation in this area. Representatives of UN, EU, NATO, OSCE, and DCAF will also participate at the Conference.
